Took the Words...

...right outta my mouth.

Kevin C. gets shrill, touches on the topic of my last post, and generally sounds like I feel.

Those Poor Oil Executives

The oil executives that appeared before congress to testify about their massive profits were ably defended. Why call them before the senate? So their profits are high...that doesn't make them bad people.

I almost started to agree...almost.

Now we know why the Republicans in the senate didn't put the oil execs under oath when they testified before Congress. It's because they were lying, and I can only assume the Republican senators knew they were lying. Certainly the Republican president of the senate, Vice President Dick Cheney knew they were lying. He was in the room, both at the meeting they lied about and in the senate chambers when they did the lying.
A White House document shows that executives from big oil companies met with Vice President Cheney's energy task force in 2001 -- something long suspected by environmentalists but denied as recently as last week by industry officials testifying before Congress.
Well I'm just shocked.

If heads of industry want people like me to stop treating them like criminals, then they should stop acting like criminals. Furhtermore, if my libertarian friends want to defend high oil profits, they should ask themselves how much of that good, healthy profit comes from companies coopting state power, both here and abroad. At least in this country its rare for oil companies to coopt state power for the purposes of hanging civil rights activists.
